This chapter provides both an introduction and overview of the book. It discusses the background and history and conceptual arguments for liberal arts and sciences education for the global twenty-first century, as well the various trends of re-engagement with the liberal arts model in the USA (notably Harvard University) at the start of the century, the reimagination of the model in Europe (more specifically by the Amsterdam University College experience) and the various forms of experimentation in China as well as the conditions under which these could best succeed. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2016.
