Inspired by the philosophy of liberal education with its origins in both Chinese and Western cultures, a number of Chinese universities have been implementing general education or Suzhi education with the conviction that all undergraduate students should be broadly educated while trained in a specialized area. This chapter discusses various concepts and the significance and practice of general education in China through a historical examination of why general education has become one of the primary foci of contemporary university reform. Tsinghua University is showcased as an example of how general education is implemented in China with Chinese characteristics in spite of the American influence. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2016.
