Tóm tắt

In this chapter, University of California (UC) Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks traces the origins of undergraduate education in the USA and at the UC, reviewing the liberal arts tradition in the context of the system of public higher education that developed in the USA. Through this chapter, Dirks argues that US public higher education and its blend of liberal learning in tension with pre-professional training has been immensely important to the nation, and is worth not only preserving, but also enhancing and strengthening, given its contributions to economic growth, innovation, socioeconomic mobility, civic engagement, and cultural vitality. He ends by articulating the growing importance of a liberal education to preparing students around the world for the challenges of life in the twenty-first century. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2016.
