This article examines a specific form of education designed to serve both professional formation and liberal education, namely legal education. There are five sections: the first section discusses the origin and historical evolution of legal education; the next section describes the unique goals of legal education and competing interests of different stakeholders; the subsequent section presents an analysis of formative influences and drivers of change common to modern legal professions; this is followed by a section on educational continuum covering an explanation of the different phases of legal education; and the article concludes with the latest developments and influences shaping the future, namely managerialism, audit, diversity, and access. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
