Tóm tắt

The main purpose of this article is to illustrate the advantages of integrating service learning in a liberal education course. Service learning is a teaching pedagogy that combines meaningful community service with academic instruction. Service learning project enriches students’ experiences by involving them in community service activities and relating those experiences to their academic and personal development. Employing the theme Let’s Recycle—Green Technology Service Learning project in a decision making course, this article demonstrates that undergraduates can learn to apply decision making skills while being able to generate fresh ideas and create ‘new’ products from recycled materials. Eighty-five undergraduate students from various faculties participated in this project. Employing demonstration technique as their oral presentation, the students demonstrated how to make ‘new’ products from recycled materials in front of real jury and audience. Based from the analysis of qualitative data such as students’ oral presentations, students’ reflection papers, and personal interviews, students expressed their enthusiasm in doing this project. Killing two birds with one stone, the students acknowledged that through this service learning project, they have learned and undergone the actual process of decision making while at the same time, learn to appreciate recycling activities. But most of all, these service learning activities have enhanced the students’ confidence to talk passionately about their own recycling ideas. The project has also given the students that rare opportunities for them to be creative and for some, the venue to showcase their potential recyclable products. © 2015 American Scientific Publishers.
