Vietnam’s “??i M?i” policy and significant economic progress have had enormous impacts on its higher education system. One of the biggest problems of the country’s higher education system is, in my opinion, the mismatch between its governance and Vietnam’s de facto market economy. Despite the label “Socialist” in its official name, Vietnam has become much similar to capitalist countries around the world, while its Soviet-style education system remains practically the same as it was decades ago. Hence, the search for a new governance model has become an urgent question and generated a nationwide debate in the recent years. In this debate one can notice a tendency among some authors, especially those who studied in the USA, to absolutise the American model while negating totally the national achievements of the past. My standpoint is that any blind attempt to borrow foreign models without careful consideration of concrete local conditions cannot be successful. © 2020, The Author(s).
