Ubiquitous use of computing equipment among high school students has led to a generation that views all computer usage as acceptable. This leaves colleges with the responsibility of re-educating students in the responsible use of computers. This paper presents an experiment in educating students majoring in business at the undergraduate level in the ethical use of computing technology. As a liberal arts college, we emphasize ethics in all of our curricula. While we have a dedicated business ethics course, we strive to integrate topics about ethics in all of our classes. One such class is our class on Management Information Systems. While this course’s primary goal is to expose the students to the vast array of information technologies used in the business world, we also strive to introduce the notion that these technologies are not value-neutral and to emphasize the need for considering the ethical implications of their use. Instead of relying on formal case studies, we rely on cases gathered from current media. Students report that the immediate currency of the topics helps them better understand the topics. Data gathered supports this observation. In the second half of the semester, students are asked to work in groups to research a topic of their choice (as long as it demonstrates some ethical issue in the business use of technology) and develop a paper and present it to their peers. A wide range of topics were selected by the students, and the outcome of their research shows a significant level of maturity compared to times when the course was taught using formal cases. © 2018 34th Information Systems Education Conference.
