Tóm tắt

Liberal arts colleges, which have historically deemphasized career preparedness and eschewed vocationalism, have been expanding their career centers and placing their bets with pundits who claim that liberally educated graduates are well-positioned to take advantage of new opportunities brought forth by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. But since the majors such colleges offer often do not directly align with specific career paths, they must ensure access to opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, and mentorship by alumni so their students can learn how their education aligns with the new world of work. Students, particularly those who are the first in their family to attend college or whose identities are otherwise underrepresented in academe, also need help reconciling a seemingly rudderless education with the need to find work that will provide both a paycheck and a way to feel like they are giving back to society. Career education that focuses on helping students see the role of identity, meaning, and purpose, as well as providing them with opportunities to gain practical experience while still in school, will help students find their career identities through experimentation, iteration, and serendipity. Institutions that embrace this approach will gain a strategic advantage in an increasingly competitive enrollment landscape. This chapter looks at innovative career education programs offered by liberal arts colleges. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Melanie V. Buford, Michael J. Sharp, and Michael J.
